Boiler systems and efficiency

All New boilers have to comply with part l of the building regulations and therefore should be of the

high efficiency type.   A high efficiency condensing boiler works on the principle of recovering as

much as possible of the waste heat which is normally wasted from the flue of a conventional

(non-condensing) boiler. High efficiency condensing boilers convert 86% or more of their                                                       fuel into heat, compared to 65% for old G rated boilers.

SEDBUK ratings

SEDBUK stands for 'Seasonal Efficiency of a Domestic Boiler in the UK', and provides a fair comparison

of the energy performance of different boilers. What difference can an energy efficient boiler make?
•It produces less CO2 •It will consume less fuel •It can therefore significantly reduce gas heating costs

How is a SEDBUK rating calculated?
SEDBUK refers to the average annual efficiency achieved in typical domestic conditions, and the rating is

calculated using:•The pattern of usage and typical domestic usage patterns •The UK climate •Boiler type
•Ignition •Fuel used •Internal store size
Step One:  A SEDBUK rating assesses what percentage of the fuel that the boiler consumes is

converted into heat.

Step Two: That percentage is given a rating using a scale from 'A' (at the highest level of efficiency)

to 'G'.It's a way of estimating annual fuel running costs, and all new boilers should be SEDBUK Band

A or B rated except in some specific circumstances.

There are three main types of system in general use in domestic situations:

1. combination (combi) boiler as seen in diagram 1 (click to enlarge).

which has no tanks or hot water cylinder, hot water is

on demand. Also less pipework and quicker to install.

2. system boiler as seen in diagram 2 (click to enlarge). allows

central heating circuit to be pressurised making it more

efficient. Less pipework than a convential system.

3. conventional boiler system  as seen in diagram 3 (click to enlarge).

older design heating is open vented - less efficient and uses the

    most pipework.
